A getaway setting with lots of adventures: check the Dominican Republic.
As one of the first cities built in the Americas, a visit to the cultural capital city of Santo Domingo is one of the hottest Dominican Republic Excursions. Santo Domingo is the country's largest city and major seaport. It is also a major economic, administrative, and tourist hub. Spending a day in Santo Domingo can give tourists a glimpse of the rich historical heritage of this tiny Caribbean nation of less than 10 million people. Interesting spots in Santo Domingo include the Santa Maria la Menor Cathedral that was built between 1514 and 1520. It is believed to be where the remains of Christopher Columbus lie. The palace of Diego Colon, built in 1510, meanwhile was converted into a museum and opened to the public in 1957. Diego Colon (Diego Columbus in English) was a viceroy of the island (1511 - 1526) and more significantly, son of Christopher Columbus. The fortified walls of the old Spanish town, and the churches of San Francisco and San Nicolas, both built in the 16th century, are also worth visiting while on vacation in the Dominican Republic. The city is also home to probably the oldest university in America, the Autonomous University of Sto. Domingo. The historic educational institution was established in 1538. For the art-lovers, various museums and art galleries such as the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Dominican Man (formerly the National Museum and known for its collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts), and the Museum of Modern Art can also be found in the city. A visit to the Columbus Lighthouse and the many botanical gardens and national parks are other recommended destinations for excursions. Participants to such excursions are limited so you have to make up your mind quickly. If you are going to buy cigars on streets or local shops, make sure that these are freshly rolled out in front of you. The most popular way to take it is just with ice or coke is added to the rum to make a drink called Cuba Libre. Dominican Republic shopping is not complete without tasting a bottle of Dominican rum.
